Course Structure What this course offers
The CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) course gives you the skills, knowledge and experience to be competent and feel confident onsite. It is aimed at anyone looking to work on low-rise building projects as a skilled tradesperson, supervisor or builder.
Ways to Study
To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate competency in 11 core units and 8 elective units from the options below.
Core Units (11)
- CPCCBC4001 – Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 1 and 10 Buildings (Pre-requisite unit)
- CPCCBC4053 – Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 2 to 9 Type C Buildings (Pre-requisite unit)
- CPCCBC4002 – Manage work health and safety in the building and construction workplace
- CPCCBC4007 – Plan building and construction work
- CPCCBC4008 – Supervise site communication and administration processes for building and construction projects
- CPCCBC4009 – Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects
- CPCCBC4010* – Apply structural principles to residential and commercial constructions
- CPCCBC4012 – Read and interpret plans and specifications
- CPCCBC4014 – Prepare simple building sketches and drawings
- CPCCBC4018 – Apply site surveys and set-out procedures to building and construction projects
- CPCCBC4021 – Minimise waste on the building and construction site

- BSBPMG422 – Apply project quality management techniques
- CPCCBC4003 – Select, prepare and administer a construction contract
- CPCCBC4004 – Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects
- CPCCBC4006 – Select, procure and store construction materials for building and construction projects
- CPCCBC4005 – Produce labour and material schedules for ordering
- CPCSUS4002 – Use building science principles to construct energy efficient buildings
- CPCCBC4013 – Prepare and evaluate tender documentation
- CPCCBC4024 – Resolve business disputes
This qualification meets one of the requirements for you to obtain a licence with your states regulatory body. Please consult with your local authority to ensure you are eligible and meet other criteria prior to commencing studies with us.
Scope of Work
- Building work on a class 1 or class 10 building
- Building work on classes 2 to 9 buildings with a gross floor area not more than 2000m², but not including Type A or Type B construction
- Building work that consists of non-structural work on a building, regardless of—
- the class of the building; or
- the gross floor area of the building
- Prepare plans and specifications if the plans and specifications are:
- for the licensee’s personal use, or
- for use in building work to be performed by the licensee personally.
Qualifications Required
Any one of the following:
- Successful completion of CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building);
- Successful completion of a course the authority considers is at least equivalent to the course mentioned above;
- A recognition certificate as a builder qualified to carry out the scope of work for the licence class;
- A qualification or statement of attainment of required competency for the class of licence.

The course duration will vary depending on your experience, skills and chosen study mode. As a guide:
- Standard duration is between 12-24 months
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): 3-6 months- this term may be extended by Funding Criteria, amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required – eligibility criteria apply
- CSQ
- Program completion date is 20 September 2022 (for the Higher Level Skills General Program 2020/21 Contract)
- Program completion date is 20 September 2022(for the Apprentice Advance+ Higher Level Skills Program 2020/21 Contract)
- Program completion date is 20 September 2022 (for the Major Projects program 2020/21 Contract).
- Fee for Service: 3-12 months subject to the amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required
Your skills will be assessed through a mix of practical and theory tasks. Which is essentially showing us what you’ve learnt and how you do it.
Theory and Practical Assessment will be assessed Online. Practical Assessment will be conducted online through instructions and workplace activities conducted in your place of work. You will then make these completed tasks available to your trainer via the online learning platform to assess.
