The BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is designed specifically to give you specialised skills and knowledge in areas of WHS implementation, maintenance and response. This course is generally considered the minimum entry point for anyone wanting to work in occupational work, health & safety.
During your training, you will cover a broad range of practical skills and knowledge that will allow you to provide accurate, valid and timely Work Health and Safety (WHS) advice to ensure that everyone’s right to be safe at work is enforced. You’ll gain knowledge and skills in assisting with and responding to incidents, implementing and maintaining WHS consultation, hazard identification, risk assessment and control and assisting with ongoing WHS law compliance.
The BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety can be funded under the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Higher Qualification Initiative* You may also be eligible for RPL allowing you to fast track your qualification.

Course Structure What this course offers
The BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety provides the skills and knowledge to carry out work, health & safety responsibilities in the workplace. Better still! WHS roles are relevant in almost any workplace in Australia.
To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate competency in 5 core and 5 elective units. Please refer below for the core units of competency and a sample of suggested electives:
Core Units (5)
- BSBWHS412 – Assist with compliance with WHS laws
- BSBWHS413 – Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes
- BSBWHS414 – Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
- BSBWHS415 – Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems
- BSBWHS416 – Contribute to workplace incident response
Elective Units (5)
- BSBWRT411 – Write complex documents
- BSBWHS418 – Assist with managing WHS compliance of contractors
- BSBWHS419 – Contribute to implementing WHS monitoring processes
- BSBSTR401 – Promote innovation in team environments
- BSBSUS411 – Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices

The course duration will vary depending on your experience, skills and chosen study mode. As a guide:
- Between 12 – 24 months depending on your current experience and skills
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): 3-6 months- this term may be extended by Funding Criteria, amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required – eligibility criteria apply
- CSQ
- Program completion date is 20 September 2022 (for the Higher Level Skills General Program 2020/21 Contract)
- Program completion date is 20 September 2022(for the Apprentice Advance+ Higher Level Skills Program 2020/21 Contract)
- Program completion date is 20 September 2022 (for the Major Projects program 2020/21 Contract).
- Fee for Service: 3-12 months subject to the amount of RPL awarded and subsequent Gap Training required
Your skills will be assessed through a mix of practical and theory tasks. Which is essentially showing us what you’ve learnt and how you do it.
Theory may be assessed Online or via Workbook. Practical Assessment will be conducted at your place of work or work site with fit for purpose facilities and equipment which are to be made available to your FTA trainer & Assessor for training and assessment purposes.
